Whiteboard Project Band Of The Day: Therapies Son

Name : Therapies Son
Okay, we can all probably agree that we may have overdosed on lo-fi in the last year or so.
Bands jumped on the lo-fi wagon and rode it with gay abandon, to the extent that music reviewers eventually started to get a a bit perturbed by the lo-fi nation. However, used correctly, it is an effective method of music and todays Band Of The Day has it down. Alex Jacob records as Therapies Son and he produces music that has touched the heart of the meanest of editors and reviewers. Much like Porcelain Raft, Perfume Genius and Idiot Glee, Jacob is a bedroom troubador, pouring his emotions into music which is experimental in how evocative it is and troubling in how raw it sounds. It is believed that Jacob began his musical journey after having his heart broken by a girl. The resulting angst-filled songs naturally caught the attention of the far-from-joyful Transparent records, the home of the wondeful Perfume Genius. Since joing this stable, Jacob has released music that has staggered people. An uneasy fragility and a feeling of poignancy permeates through his music.

Many critics are now hopping onto the “hate wagon” (what a mighty fine machine it is too) regarding the most recent lo-fi offerings that this century’s second decade has thrown up. What a change of heart, eh? Everyone was all about Wavves and Best Coast all of five minutes ago- ‘lyk omg lo-fi is d best ting since dem internetz’ etc- but now it seems that the purveyors of this genre have fallen out of favour, somewhat. Paradoxically, although this might be the case for full-scale fuzzed up bands, there’s a pocket of obscenely young musicians making stripped down, kinda fuzzy singer-songwriter tracks in their bedrooms- to which some are attaching the tag “lo-fi”- who are all the rage right now.
It may seem lazy to lump Therapies Son in the same category as two songwriters causing quite a hubub right now: Perfume Genius and Idiot Glee. However, they are all of a similarly (read: depressingly) young age, all write incredibly personal, fragile songs, and all have a recorded sound that, although can be polished at times, is more often than not a little DIY and rough around the edges. Luckily though, with Therapies Son, along with Idiot and Perfume, we really feel that their lo-fi sensibility arises as a result of being stuck in their bedrooms in their parents’ houses with no jobs, and little but a laptop with some basic software, unable to push the boat out for a good quality mic. This is stripped-down pop that arises from necessity, rather than intention.
Altered Zones Features Therapies Son’s Still I Call
Loving the cinematic swells on “Still I Call,” the closing track on Therapies Son’s debut Over The Sea EP, which you can now stream in full on the 19-year-old Los Angeles native’s bandcamp. Think Broken Social Scene covering a lost outtake from The White Album, re-interpreted by a one-man-band with a soft spot for musical theater. —Emilie Friedlander, Altered Zones

Therapies Son - SXSW 3.17.11
Therapies Son @ Forest Family / Transparent party, SXSW 2011 March 17th. Therapies Son are an exciting prospect, playing a kind of Flaming Lips influenced Rock ‘n’ Roll, the band have a 10″ EP out through Transparent on March 21st and will be in the UK for some showcases in April or May. The band burned our brains while the Texas sun fried our skin.

Therapies Son “Over The Sea”
Sargent House 2011
Multi-instrumentalist Alex Jacob, or what will commonly be known as Therapies Son has released his debut EP through Sargent House, the label responsible for classic releases from Tera Melos, Fang Island, Zach Hill, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Big Sir, Adebisi Shank and many more. This is an EP that I can easily say will be one to make our favorite albums of 2011. Painting picture after picture of juxtaposed and shifting worlds where bike rides, carnivals and relationships flow out of a bubbling spring of distant memories of the best and worst times of ones life.
Therapies Son - Over The Sea EP Comes Early
I wrote music when I was 19. It was really shitty. Alex Jacob, on the other hand, is only 19 but writing decidedly non-shitty music under the moniker Therapies Son. His debut EP, Over the Sea, features five tracks of sublime glimmering, glistening, and glittering — listen to it and you’ll know what I’m talking about — a combination that suits his brand of retro-pop well. It’s a pretty cinematic and hopeful aesthetic for music inspired by a broken heart.
Over the Sea is due digitally March 22 and on vinyl April 16 (Record Store Day) via Sargent House. Listen to the full EP below (or here):

Altered Zones Features Therapies Son Video
Enjoying the pitch-perfect, Donovan/Lennon tribute vibes on this new track from Los Angeles 19-year-old Alex Jacob, who has been spinning guilt-free retro-pop gold under the Therapies Son moniker for more than a minute now. Footage from Altered States, HEAD, and 2001: A Space Odyssey casts a wonderfully sinister shadow over this walking-pace feel-good ballad, which probably won’t summon images of centaurs, floating cruxifixes, and neon mermaids in itself, but might just convince you to “open your imagination, man.” —Emilie Friedlander, Altered Zones

Therapies Son - Touching Down & EP News
Last month, Therapies Son was opening for Smith Westerns and Yuck, earning fans in both other bands (Yuck adored them) and certain journalists (see here). Thus, a distinct group will be quite excited to hear news of the artist’s debut EP. The rest of you should hop on board while the tickets are cheap.
Titled Over The Sea, the five (or six if you buy digitally) song collection finds Alex Jacob using big ideas to hit the major touchstones of serious music listeners while still finding something unique to put forward. Check out the MP3 for “Touching Down” below and check out the track listing below that. Over The Sea is out digitally worldwide on March 22nd and 10” vinyl exclusive for Record Store Day on 4/16 via Sargent House. (UK Release 10” vinyl on Transparent)
