Indie Wire Exclusive: Poster For Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s ‘Los Chidos’ Premiering at SXSW

Music and film worlds will be overlapping in more ways than one at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, and we’ve got the exclusive poster debut of The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s feature film “Los Chidos,” which will be making its debut in the narrative feature competion. Surprise surprise, this is the fifth film he’s directed, but only the second one to be seen on the fest circuit. His previous effort, “The Sentimental Engine Slayer” played numerous festivals around the world, and was financed by Red Hot Chili Peppers axeman John Frusciante.
The official synopsis reads: Set amid the noisy outskirts of some unnamed Mexican metropolis, “Los Chidos” tells the story of the Gonzales Family. Proprietors of a tire repair junkyard sandwiched between two busy freeways, the Gonzales clan’s days are spent wallowing in lazy, mindless routine. When a confused American industrialist happens into the shop with a flat tire, the family’s place in the shame-free food chain is called into question. Family secrets begin emerging as love blossoms in Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s satirical dark comedy.
The satirical dark comedy was shot with a micro-budget and micro-crew in a Guadalajaran whorehouse and we’ve heard it bears a bit of an early John Waters-esque edge. It’s got a serious bent to it though, as in his director’s statement, Rodriguez Lopez says the film “served as a meditation that exposes the unfortunate size of our otherwise beautiful and unique culture. Namely, the inherent machismo, misogyny, classism and homophobic values passed down by our grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.” He adds, “God is a black lesbian” at the end. Rad. We can’t wait to check this one out. SXSW Film runs from March 9-17.

Kindness Of Ravens Feature/Interview: Gypsyblood

Another band we kept hearing about during last month’s South by Southwest festival was Chicago’s Gypsyblood. The bandformed in 2009 and just released their debut full-length, Cold in the Guestway, which spans a range of sounds—all raw, all rough, and all undeniably appealing. One of our favorite tracks from the album, ”In Our Blood,” is this week’s Song of the Week. Gypsyblood’s Adam James took a few minutes recently to sit down and talk with us about their sound, why Chi-town’s awesome, and getting crapped on at shows.
Kindness of Ravens: So, alright, first thing’s first: Really awesome record. Original sound too—very raw and rough but still surprisingly melodic and catchy. Though there are seemingly some definite nods to a few bands I adored in my high school years, Jesus and Mary Chain prime among them. Were you two looking for a particular sound or is it just something that was born organically?
Exploding In Sound Review Le Butcherettes SXSW ‘11

The hype surrounding Le Butcherettes leading into SXSW was enough to make them one of my most anticipated bands to catch. Sure, I’ve only been listening to them for about a month, but let’s start with the facts. The latest band to sign to Sargent House & Rodriguez Lopez Productions (with Omar Rodriguez Lopez producing their record) has been garnering astounding praise for their live shows with the press, and the technical garage punks are going out as main support for Deftones and Dillinger Escape Plan this Spring. On top of that, the band is comprised of the magnificent Teri Gender Bender on vocals/guitar/keys, Jonathan Hischke (Hella,Broken Bells) on bass, and the incredible Gabe Serbian (The Locust) on drums.
SPIN Best & Worst SXSW Day 4
If you are going to make a Best & Worst list and have something in the Worst category, be glad it was for the Line to get in being too long !
WORST LINE: OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ GROUP
When Omar Rodriguez-Lopez’s solo show turned into a Mars Volta gig with the addition of singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala onstage, the crowds amassed — and nowhere are the Mars Volta and their predecessor, hardcore legends At the Drive-In, more revered than in their homestate. The lines wrapped the blocks, and some fans even climbed the trees for a peek in. Inside, it was the spastic, Spanish-flavored prog meltdown synonymous with their names: Rodriguez-Lopez summoned mind-bending sounds from his axe, while Bixler-Zavala held the mic stand like a boa constrictor, delivering his socio-political screeds about the parental system and not supporting children’s aspirations, in song. — WILLIAM GOODMAN
COS Interview Gypsyblood SXSW 2011
Have you ever been cornered in the restroom and barked at with questions? No? Well, Chicago’s Gypsyblood has – at least when Cluster 1 and the fantastic duo decided to knock heads in the stall. Well, not literally. Or even metaphorically. Ack! ANYWAY, check out this adventurous interview which has Cluster 1 pestering Adam James and Kyle Victor with questions about their time at SXSW, recording in a structure built by Frank Lloyd Wright, signing with Sargent House, and the band’s upcoming debut, Cold In The Guestway, due out April 12th. Check it out…and then wash your hands, please.
damn, our boys have dirty mouths.
RCRD LBL Features - Adebisi Shank’s “Genki Shank”
Adebisi Shank is the bastard son of Stephen Hawking and Andrew W.K. That’s honestly the closest I’m going to get to capturing a sound that is so awesomely and chaotically this band’s own. The Irish trio melds seamlessly math, experimental rock, some serious rhythmic concoctions and tasteful electronics, all on display in would-be theme song (battle cry) “Genki Shank”. The aptly named This Is The Second Album Of A Band Called Adebisi Shank is released in the US tomorrow on Sargent House and has been making the rounds abroad on Ireland’s quickly up and coming Richter Collective. Catch the energy that is surely equaled live later this week at SXSW. I always was a sucker for a man in uniform.
Bands I Miss: These Arms Are Snakes & Daughters
SXSW will be awesome this year. But two bands that will never be present there again and who bring back such fond memories to me about seeing truly great live music are These Arms Are Snakes above and Daughters below. I miss those fuckers so much.
