Ear To The Ground Live Review: Good Old War At Cleveland House of Blues 12.18.11
We got a chance to sit down with Good Old War guitarist Dan Schwartz before the Cleveland House of Blues show on Sunday night. Dan was kind enough to give us some info on the upcoming album and subsequent tour. We’re excited to share our impressions of the future plans as well as the show itself. Suffice it to say we loved it.
Dan explained that the new album still uses the same instrumentation and harmonies (yes!), so we were excited to hear that. So many bands feel like by album three (which GOW is up to already!) they need to somehow change their sound. We’re cool with keeping this style. Dan emphasized that it remains an emotionally-driven album, which is another good sign.
We asked one of our favorite questions about the songwriting process. He explained that he often arrives with a full song, but Keith and Tim sometimes have partial songs and they develop them together. (We’d love to be a fly on the wall for that process!) From what Dan explained, it seems like the songs on the new album, like many of the songs on the other albums, emphasize what he described as the “space between big things.” So, in other words, they don’t write so much about the big breakups and the big fall in love moments; rather, they focus on the feelings and emotions between those events. It makes sense and we like it.
So, coming off a two-part US tour that hit both west and east coast, the band is preparing to take a few weeks off for the holidays before spending a few months as Anthony Green’s band. Those are going to be some killer shows, so keep your ear to the ground for those tickets. We thought it important to note that these gentlemen have a new album called Come Back As Rain coming out on MARCH 6th on Sargent House and they are already taking pre-orders, so snag that bad boy if you can.
