On the Ipod as the crucial roadtrip piece by Tim Arnold of Good Old War
I’m sitting with my legs outstretched on a bench in a very large gray van traveling at 70 miles per hour somewhere between Vancouver, BC and Edmonton, AB. This is the beginning of a twelve-hour drive, one that was preceded by a four-day drive from Jacksonville, FL to Vancouver.
I’m listening to Ween on headphones, Jason is listening to the Bill Bryson audio book A History of Nearly Everything while he drives and Keith, Dan, and Annie are asleep on the futon that was placed on the ground of the van after two benches were pulled out. This particular twelve-hour drive is one that we’ve done a number of times but it holds a special place in all of our hearts as a result of it being fucking beautiful out here.

Salt Lake City Weekly’s Concert Review: Good Old War at The Depot

Tim Arnold, drummer and vocalist in indie-rock trio Good Old War, has described the band’s live shows as “a campfire with friends where you play songs together and sing along like friends.” And at Good Old War’s intimate, communal show at the Depot last night, no description could have been more accurate.
The set list consisted of tunes both new and old, from Good Old War’s 2008 debut Only Way to Be Alone, their self-titled sophomore album (2010) to the lovely Come Back as Rain, released earlier this year. With tremendous joie de vivre, Arnold, Keith Goodwin (vocals/guitar) and Dan Schwartz (vocals/guitar) played a set that not only displayed incredible musicianship— including a few awesome guitar solos from Schwartz—but also pulled at the audience members’ heartstrings with emotionally charged songs like “That’s Some Dream.” With the song’s poignant lyrics, including “I’m gonna live, I’m all right / I’m gonna die, it’s all right / I’m OK,” it wasn’t surprising to hear a guy behind me say to his friend, “Damn, that one made me tear up …”

Washingtonian Band Notes: Good Old War Tonight at Black Cat DC / Interview

Good Old War plays Black Cat this Tuesday, August 7.

We last chatted with Philadelphia-based band Good Old War back in April, when they were in town to play a show at Black Cat. They return to the venue tomorrow, but vocalist/guitarist Keith Goodwin, a recent father, is currently taking advantage of some down time to hang out with his son and rehearse for an upcoming tour this fall, which means he almost missed this interview because his nine-month-old son started to cry. Fatherhood aside, Goodwin, drummer Tim Arnold, and guitarist Dan Schwartz have spent several hours a day perfecting tunes off their latest album, Come Back as Rain. The emotionally charged record, already voted one of the best releases of 2012 by iTunes, will be the centerpiece of Tuesday night’s show at the Black Cat (the gig is one of three preempting a larger opening tour with Dispatch this September). Multilayered and richly acoustic, the record has helped shape a growing fan base around Good Old War’s raw, melodic sound. (It also doesn’t hurt that Mad Men actress Peyton List, a.k.a. Jane Sterling, stars in the music video for their latest single, “Amazing Eyes.”) We caught up with Goodwin to discuss writing the new album, touring with the Counting Crows, and his secret love for electronic beats.
You have a big tour coming up in September—what’s the band up to until that starts?
Well, we just got done touring with the Counting Crows for about a month, then we did some Canadian festivals on the way back—they were all really awesome. Now we’re just practicing for a couple shows we have in August, so we’re doing that and writing songs and hanging out with our families. We go back out on tour at the end of September for a solid three months, so right now’s our time to just practice for three or four hours a day and spend time with our families.
What was the tour with the Counting Crows like?
It was really good. It was a good opportunity to get in front of a lot people who haven’t heard us before. Hopefully everyone had a good time while we were playing. I think it was good for us; we sold a lot of CDs. Plus it was all amphitheaters, so it was fun to play outside in the sunshine.

Good Old War’s Tim Arnold Recounts For Matador ” What It’s Like To Play Conan”
Good Old War drummer and singer Tim Arnold recounts what it’s like to play for the “towering ginger man who cracks jokes.”I’M IN LA and I am laying in bed, at the crack of dawn. Yesterday I was in Boise. How does this happen to me?
Really feeling strange on a Z-pack as a result of bronchitis. I take a shower and attempt to squeak out some notes. It goes OK but mostly what I’m thinking about is why we have to go to the Warner Brothers lot so early. I just want more sleep. It’s not gonna happen. Shut up Tim, just shut up.
This is our first TV appearance and I’ll be damned if I fuck it up. We arrive, say hello to the crew, run around in circles setting up our gear, change a drumhead, ask the LD for gaff tape, apply it to my snare drum to get that nice warm thud I like. The bass drum is a rental and the heads are not tuned so I ask our sound engineer / producer / friend Jason Cupp to tune it up and he does with a quickness and skill that I expected.
Everyone is setting up and there is excitement in the air but it is wafted away by a sense of urgency or business. Get it done. As a fan of the show I keep looking around to maybe catch a glimpse of the towering ginger man who cracks jokes. He is nowhere to be found.
